My subject matter is not always known when I start a work. Sometimes at the beginning there is no subject at all but will eventually present itself to me while I am working. This sometimes makes the process for me quite unpleasant because there is a certain feeling that I am trying to express but while I work my mind starts exploding with different ideas and thoughts that the finished piece rarely represents my initial idea.
I usually work with my canvas flat on the floor so that I can become part of the work. I enjoy working on a large canvas because it can become very difficult to really express on a small surface. I also do not necessarily have a traditional right or wrong way for the piece to be viewed. I create all my work so that they can be viewed many ways which allows the piece to speak differently to each viewer. I work with many different mediums for their texture, color, and their drying patterns. I usually work straight from the container the medium comes in because I usually don’t like to work with a brush. I work mainly with tempera paint for its drying characteristics, but also work with acrylics, oils, and non traditional mediums like caulk, silicone, plasters, glue, and other textural mediums.
Texture is usually a major part of my work because I sense that with any emotion, there are several layers, bumps, crevasses, and cracks that are layered together that make up a feeling or thought. The same is true for my use of color, which is usually quite intense and is a vital part of my work. In the end, all I want is for my work to mean something to someone. I want it to evoke some type of feeling, whether that is good, bad, happy or sad. I want people to feel the way that I did and still do when I view art. Every time some kind of reaction is established after viewing my work is when I know that I have reached complete satisfaction with what I am creating.
